Co-Browsing

Co-Browsing

Co-browsing (collaborative browsing) is a support technique that lets an agent view and interact with a customer's web page in real time, scrolling, highlighting, or filling fields alongside them. It mirrors only the browser content, not the whole device, so the visitor stays in control of the session.

Customer Messaging & Engagement

TL;DR

Co-browsing lets a support agent see and help navigate the exact web page a visitor is on, without taking over their whole screen.

Key Points

An agent and a [[website-visitor]] look at the same page together; the agent can highlight elements or, with permission, take control to click and fill forms. [1]

Unlike full screen sharing, co-browsing mirrors only the browser DOM (Document Object Model), so background apps and other tabs stay private. [2][4]

It needs no downloads or plugins on the visitor side because the page already loads a small JavaScript snippet, similar to how a [[live-chat-widget]] boots from [[embed-code]]. [1][3]

Sensitive fields like passwords and card numbers can be masked so the [[support-operator]] never sees them, which matters for [[gdpr-compliance]]. [2]

Vendors usually launch it from inside a [[conversation]] to guide checkout, troubleshoot forms, or speed up [[first-contact-resolution]]. [3][4]

It is typically an [[escalation]] step for complex issues that text [[live-chat]] alone cannot resolve quickly.

How co-browsing works

Co-browsing relies on a script on the host page that captures the page's structure, the DOM, and mirrors it to the agent's screen. [1][2] Because only markup and styling are transmitted rather than a video stream, it uses far less bandwidth than screen sharing and works on slow connections. [4] During a Live Chat Conversation, the Support Operator can open a session and either highlight elements for the visitor or, after explicit consent, take control to scroll, click, and complete fields on their behalf. [1][4] The Website Visitor keeps final authority over sensitive actions, and the agent's view is limited to the active browser tab, not the whole device.

Co-browsing vs. screen sharing

The two are often confused but differ in scope and control. Screen sharing broadcasts everything visible on a desktop as an image or video feed, exposing notifications, other apps, and background windows. [2] Co-browsing is narrower: it shares only the web page, so it is more private and bandwidth-friendly, and it lets the agent interact, not just watch. [2][4] Co-browsing also supports field masking that hides passwords or payment data from the Support Operator, a property that helps with GDPR Compliance in regulated sectors like banking. [2] Screen sharing is better when an issue spans offline software; co-browsing wins when the problem lives inside a website and you want tight privacy boundaries.

When teams use it

Co-browsing shines for guiding a Website Visitor through complex forms, account settings, onboarding, or checkout, which can lift conversion and reduce Chat Abandonment Rate. [3][4] It usually appears as an Escalation path: an agent starts in text Live Chat, realizes the issue is visual, and launches a session to resolve it faster, improving First Contact Resolution (FCR). [3] Larger platforms often bundle it into Omnichannel Support suites. [3] Lightweight tools, including Eloqra, do not ship co-browsing today; they focus on fast text messaging where an operator handles each Conversation from Telegram. For visual help on those tools, teams typically pair chat with screenshots or a separate session link.

Live Chat

Live chat is a real-time, text-based support channel embedded in a website or app that lets visitors message a business and get answers within the same browsing session, without phoning or emailing. It pairs a customer-facing chat window with an agent or bot interface on the other side.

Support Operator

A support operator is the human on your side of a live chat who reads visitor messages and replies to them. In Eloqra the operator is whoever has access to the project's Telegram chat or Mini App inbox and answers incoming conversations from there.

Website Visitor

A website visitor is any person browsing a site where a live-chat widget is installed, tracked as an anonymous session until they send a message or identify themselves. In Eloqra, the visitor is the end-user on the other side of the chat bubble, distinct from the operator who answers from Telegram.

Escalation

Escalation is the process of moving a customer issue from a first-line agent to someone with more seniority, authority, or specialized expertise when it cannot be resolved at the current level. It routes the conversation to the person best equipped to solve it, rather than leaving it stuck.

First Contact Resolution (FCR)

First Contact Resolution (FCR) is the percentage of customer issues fully resolved in a single interaction, with no transfer, callback, or follow-up needed. It measures how often a support team solves a problem the first time the customer reaches out.

GDPR Compliance

GDPR compliance means handling the personal data of people in the EU and EEA in line with the General Data Protection Regulation: processing it lawfully, transparently, and securely, and honoring the rights data subjects have over their own data. For a live-chat tool this covers everything from the visitor's name and email to their IP address, location, and chat transcripts.
